Abstract

On the first assessment of the system of protected areas in Catalonia (2000-2004) We offer a reflection on the assessment of the effectiveness of the system of protected areas in Catalonia. This project was undertaken by the Institució Catalana d¿Història Natural in 2000-04. The study falls within the context of the international assessment of the effectiveness of protected areas management, including an assessment of the methodology and the processes followed, as well as the diagnosis produced. The paper concludes with a series of recommendations and proposals for applying the diagnosis, as well as using the experience acquired to promote other evaluations, of either individual protected areas or systems of protected areas, developing in this way the role of Living Observatory that the assessment of the system of protected areas in Catalonia fulfils in the Action Plan for Protected Natural Areas in Spain.
