Abstract

This paper describes the historical evolution of the three main sources for the study of land cover and land use: field work, aerial photographs and satellite remote sensing images. It goes on to analyse the commonest method for quantifying land cover and land use changes, the postclassification comparison or superposition of maps, discussing the principal problems associated with this method. Finally, an example of the analysis of land cover and land use changes in twenty-one municipalities of the Alt Empordà from 1977 to 1997 using remote sensing images is presented.
