Abstract

A review of the systematics of the species of the families Ranellidae and Bursidae (Gastropoda) from the Pliocene marine sediments of the northwestern Mediterranean is presented. The species treated are the following: Cymatium corrugatum (Lamarck, 1822), C. doderleini (D¿Ancona, 1872), C. parthenopeum (von Salis, 1793), Charonia apenninica (Sassi, 1827) i Bufonaria marginata (Martini, 1777). This review is based on the examination of specimens collected in the Baix Llobregat and Alt Empordà (northeastern Spain) and the Roussillon and Var basins (southern France). In order to establish the geographic and cronostratigraphic distributions of the species studied with a high degree of confidence, specimens from the main Miocene and Pliocene basins of the western Mediterranean and the north-eastern Atlantic were also exami- ned. Special attention is paid to the protoconch, since this structure is a very useful systematic trait at the species level in the families studied.
