Abstract

In the Montserrat massif there is a karst system in predominantly calcareous conglomerates: the Salnitre Caves. In these caves, where saltpetre was exploited in the past, there are three different kinds of phosphatic mineralizations: a) in brushite crusts, generated by substitution of calcareous stalactites; b) in disseminations (leucophosphite, francoanellite, apatite) formed by diagenesis in karstic decalcification clays, and c) in veins (leucophosphite, monetite and brushite), generated by infiltration of phosphatized fluids. The origin of the phosphorus ¿ and possibly of the nitrate that was in the caves ¿ is the leaching of bat excrement by meteoric waters.
