Abstract

A review of the systematics of the families Tonnidae, Ficidae and Cassidae (Gastropoda) from the Pliocene marine sediments of the north-western Mediterranean is presented. The species treated are the following: Eudolium fasciatum (Borson, 1821), Malea orbiculata (Brocchi, 1814), Ficus geometra (Borson, 1825), Galeodea echinophora (Linné, 1758) and Phalium saburon (Bruguière, 1792). Numerous specimens collected in the Baix Llobregat and Alt Empordà (northeastern Spain), and Roussillon and Var (southern France) basins are examined. In addition, material from the main Miocene and Pliocene basins of the western Mediterranean and north-eastern Atlantic is also examined, allowing the establishment of the geo- graphic and cronostratigraphic distribution of the species studied with a high degree of confidence. For each species a list of synonyms and a detailed description is presented. Special attention is paid to the examination of the protoconch, since this structure is a very useful systematic trait in the families studied.
