Abstract

Increased knowledge of ecosystem function makes clear the need to manage space and resources comprehensively, in order to preserve ecological processes within and between ecosystems. There is a need to develop a conceptual framework that allows the evaluation of these processes at a relevant scale. In this paper, the potential for using the landscape as a framework for conservation science is analyzed. The implications of the patchcorridor- matrix model developed in landscape ecology are evaluated at different spatial scales, emphasizing their functional consequences. The results are summarized in a set of guidelines that may be useful for nature management and conservation.
