Abstract

We present the result of two sowing experiments with the autochthonous perennial grass Achnatherum calamagros-tis, in order to evaluate its germination capability in field conditions and its potential use in reclaiming degraded areas. In the first experiment we sowed two regolith types: red clays and purple clays with gypsum. The following year we focused on the red materials and added two substrate correctives: structure conditioner and fertiliser. Emergence of A. calamagrostis occurred in June both years, two months after each sowing. Emergence percentages were about four times higher on the purple regolith than on the red clays, because the roughness of its surface facilitated the retention of seeds against erosive remotion. Densities obtained with standard species were not higher than those obtained with A. calamagrostis, but this could be also due to the especially dry conditions of the second year. No effect of the structu- re conditioner or fertiliser on the emergence percentages was detected. However, this question remains unresolved, as emergence levels were low in all cases.
