Abstract

Climate was first used in soil classification but now some of the most widespread schemes use another approach: the soil moisture and temperature regimes. Soil Taxonomy (S.S.S., 1960, 1975, 1990) introduced those concepts because they play a key role in land use suitabilities. Very few places exist where soil moisture regime has been measured by field records, so estimation in needed. Currently NEWHALL's (1976) model is usted to estimate the moisture regime, but when it is applied in a semiarid area with winter rainfall, misleading results appear. The main lines for the design of a new simulation model for soil moisture estimation (JARAUTA, 1989) able to give better soil moisture regimes estimation, are presented. Also, measured results and estimated ones from both models (NEWHALL, 1976 and JARAUTA, 1989) are compared.
