Els Esferíids (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Sphaeriidae) dels Països Catalans Authors Cristian R. Altaba Abstract Thirteen species of sphaeriid clams are known to live in the Catalan Countries: Sphaerium (S.) corneum, S. (Musculium) lacustre, Pisrdium (P.) amnicum, P. (Cyclocalyx) casertanum, P. (C.) personatum, P. (C.) obtusale, P. (C.) milium, P. (C.) subtruncatum, P. (C.) lilljeborgii, P. (C.) hibernicum, P. (C.) nitidum, P. (Neopisidium) moitessierianum and P. (Odhneripisidium) tenuilineatum. The shell of each species is described and illustrated, taking into account its variations and diagnostic traits that allow to distinguish similar species. The anatomy is briefly described. Global geographical distributions are summarized in the text, while the records in the Catalan Countries (compiled in ALTABA, 1991) are mapped. The environments where sphaeriids are found are also mentioned. It is possible that the present taxonomy of this family, being based mostly on shell characters, lumps distinct biological species and does not reflect its real diversity.
