Abstract

This is a survey of subfossil bryophytes in different peat layers of four quaternary lake sediment cores from the volcanic area of La Garrotxa, in Catalonia (Spain). Five taxa of subfossil mosses have been identified: Drepanocladus aduncus, Leptodyctium riparium, Eurhynchium schleicheri, Homalothecium sp. and Meesia triquetra. M. triquetra had never been found in Catalonia and only two references are know in the whole Iberian Peninsula, both dated from last century. The sedimentary origin of these species, as well as the possible causes of the extinction of M. triquetra, are discussed.
