Abstract

Data about the habitats and food habits of Gibbiinae beetles are rather abundant but they appear quite dispersed in the literature. In the present paper a compilation of all the information available on this topic is given.
The species reviewed have been: Gibbium psylloides, G. aequinoctiale, G. boieldieui, G. punctaticolle, Mezium affine, M. americanum, M. sulcatum, M. giganteum, M. andreaei, M. namibiensis, Lepimedozium natalense, Meziomorphum echinatum and Stethomezium squamosum.
Gibbiinae beetles are mainly scavengers. In addition, many species are closely associated with human habitats and they can easily become pests of a wide variety of stored products.
Other kinds of habitats and food habits include: nests or excrement of vertebrates (in urban environment or in caves), decaying wood and different plant substrates.
