Abstract

We provide some data about alien plants in Catalonia (NE Iberian Peninsula), mainly of garden escapes and forestry trees. According the known information, two species are reported for the first time in Europe: Lycium cinereum and Muscari latifolium. Thirteen taxa are new for the regional flora of Catalonia: Acer cappadocicum subsp. cappadocicum, Berberis × ottawensis, Corylus colurna, Cotoneaster bullatus,Cotoneaster dielsianus, Forsythia suspensa, Larix × marschlinsii, Ligustrum sinense, Liquidambar styraciflua, Nepeta racemosa, Opuntia tortispina, Pinus ponderosa and Populus trichocarpa. Other alien plants were already known, but they were confused with similar taxa. Almost all Catalan records of Symphytum officinale are from the hybrid S. × uplandicum, and those of Berberis aquifolium (Mahonia aquifolium) from the hybrid B. × decumbens. The very rare reports of Cotoneaster racemiflorus and Lupinus polyphyllus must be attributed to C. affinis and L. × regalis. Naturalised plants of Charybdis maritima s.l. (Urginea maritima) observed outside the southernmost Catalonia, where the Western Mediterranean C. maritima s.s. is an authochtonous species, belong to the Central Mediterranean C. numidica. The analysed populations of «American aster», traditionally referred to Symphyotrichum novi-belgii, are not from this species, but S. lanceolatum or the hybrid S. × salignum. Some records of Opuntia phaeacantha belong to O. engelmannii subsp. engelmannii or to O. tortispina. With regard to alien trees used in forestry, Larix × marschlinsii, Pinus strobus and Picea abies show an advanced naturalisation process in some Pyrenean sites and they will probably have self-sustaining populations in a few years.
