Casals i Guiu Abstract This paper aims to bring a notice of the outstanding astronomer Federico Rutllant Alsina, catalan born (Agullana, Alt Empordà, 1904), who was director of the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional de Chile between 1950 and 1963. Because of their negotiations with the US and european astronomers, the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory and the European Observatory at La Silla were built, being the very beginning of the great chilean observatories buit afterwards, as Cerro Pachón or Cerro Paranal.
