Abstract

In this article I present a conceptual analysis of the approaches to the topic of suicide that are to be found in the Spanish medical periodical publications of the period 1926-1936. First, I describe relevant legal changes in Spain up to the year 1936, tackling, in this way, doctrinal debates about euthanasia. Secondly, I analyse the relationship between the topic of suicide with the mental hygiene movement, as well as with the notion of “dangerousness”. Finally, I reconstruct the main debates and theoretical standpoints about the causes of suicide that can be found in the revised texts.
