“The Women for women”: The Family Planning Clinics in Catalonia during the Transition Period.

Abstract

Contraception was forbidden during Franco’s period, and this research studies the multiplicity of the agents —the women of the feminist movement and the local movement, the medical professionals and the first democratic city councils-who fought for the right to Family Planning and participated in the creation of new healthcare areas, the Family Planning Clinics. These centers, prior to the legalization of contraceptive methods in 1978, began to provide information on contraception, sexual and contraceptive education, and gynecological assistance was also offered. In summary, they made the women took control over their body and could decide when and how many children to have.
