In recent decades, the Balearic Islands’ capacity to generate wealth per inhabitant has eroded, while it has had to deal with direr challenges in terms of inequality (not only in income), and the degradation of its most important natural assets (including the climate). Can these major challenges in competitiveness, equity and sustainability be resolved through tourism specialisation amid global megatrends which COVID has only accelerated?
