Abstract

In this work, we use the replicator equation to explore one of the fundamental questions in evolutionary biology and ecology: how is biodiversity generated and maintained? Focusing on invader-driven systems, in which pairwise invasion fitnesses are determined by the invading species regardless of the invaded one, we want to relate fitnesses to the species coexisting in the final equilibrium states. We discover the mechanism behind the surviving species selection that maximizes the system resistance to external invasion, and we find that the mean number of coexisting species increases with the initial number of species.
