Abstract

This article presents the results of the research carried out in the field of the scientific journalism written in Catalan in the Balearic Islands. It puts forward the main conclusions obtained in the analysis of the scientific articles published in Catalan in the islands press from the beginning of the 19th century until the middle of the 20th century. Moreover, it includes indications about the main analyzed publications: Lignorancia, Ca Nostra, La Bona Causa, La Aurora, El Felanigense, La Veu de Mallorca o Llevant. In a second part the authors explain the main characteristics of the scientific journalism of the islands on the basis of the articles analysis, referring to the journalistic matters and genres, the geographical distribution, and to the authorship of the articles. In short, the scientific journalism in Catalan of the Balearic Islands is scarce compared to the popularisation of Spanish publications. However, the analyzed sample proves a noticeable interest in the spread among the readers of the major scientific contributions, principally those concerning agriculture, medicine and hygiene.
