Republican Scientists in Great Britain.From 1933 onward, the United Kingdom set up numerous institutions to shelter refugee scientists fleeing from the German purge, which with the onset of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 also offered asylum to Spanish scientists, giving rise to the Society for the Protection of Science and Learning. The article discusses how this was done and portrays the scientists who benefi ted from the British initiative which, despite being of less import than the Mexican undertaking, defi nitely offered solidarity and shelter to Spanish scientists.
