The overwhelming success of the pharmaceutical enterprise founded by Burroughs and Wellcome in England at the end of the 19th century lay not only in the incorporation of scientifi c work in

developing its products but also in the solid reputation it held amongst the medical profession. This, in turn, derived additional prestige, which was used implicitly in marketing and novel strategies to sell their medical products.
