Abstract

Theological impacts of breakthroughs in physics.

Breakthroughs in physics reach far beyond the specialised scientific community alone, instead they present new ways of seeing the world that affect culture in general, and some aspects of theological thought. In this article, we briefly outline how certain breakthroughs in physics have affected theology: the birth of classical mechanics and its determinism, the cosmology of a universe in expansion, quantum indeterminism and the theory of chaos. All these have gradually modified the ways in which we imagine the connection between God and Earth.
