Abstract

It seems that the most ancient monastic processionary coming from any church in the ancient Narbonese is the one from the monastery of Saint Salvator of Gellone, now called Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert. Its the manuscript Montpellier, Bib. Mun., ms. 20, f. 1-65v, that can be dated to the third quarter of 13th century. Its text is very important because it shows that some processionaries were built up from a primitive compilation of chant pieces for the main liturgical celebrations of a church, later completed with texts for other celebrations of the year. Among the primitive celebrations is that of the Exaltation of the Cross (14th september), in which the True Cross given by Charlemagne to the duke William of Aquitaine, the founder of the monastery, was shown to the people.
