Abstract

In this paper the signature of the altarpiece of Cardet, that never before had been read, is for the first time unveiled. The clue for the reading «(I)OH(ANNE)S PIN(TOR)», is the signature painted at the same place, more complete and well preserved, of the Gia altar frontal. Furthermore, another inscription that was never well identified, neither by Cook, nor by later art historians, is also discussed here. It belongs to the mother in the scene of the massacre of the holy innocents and is RAQ(VE)L, which cries in despair for her sons.
