Abstract

Hispanical liturgical books have kept an ancient formulary akin to the Roman canonica prex. It is tempting to describe the former as an intermediary between the prayer quoted by Ambrose in his De sacramentis and the Roman «Gregorian» Canon of the Gelasian Sacramentary. A study of the pneumatical epiclesis characteristic of the Hispanic version demonstrates however that it represents, in some respects at least, a singular developement. Under this perspective, it appear far less archaic than the Roman Canon, although its general pattern, or indeed the mention of the Eucharist as imago et similitudo of Christ, clearly shows the opposit.
