Abstract

Two inscriptions from Visigothic times, dated 652 and ca. 627 and coming from Gaudix and Mérida, respectively, mention the relics places in two altars upon their consecration. Curiously, the relics not only refer to the body of Christ but also to his blood. Placing a piece of eucharistic bread together with the relics is a custom already witnessed in the ancient orders of consecration of Roman altars; on the other hand, placing also a part of eucharistic blood could be a Hispanic tradition since it seems to the only mentioned in these two inscriptions.
