Abstract

The Order of Saint Jerome commissioned the printing of a breviary for all its monasteries for the first time in 1499. This was an important step in the process of putting an end to the liturgical disparity resulting from diocesan influences. The ostensible result in the Proper of Saints was a very striking numerical decrease in the number of feasts of Hispanic saints with respect to the Hieronymite manuscript sources of the 15th century. This paper identifies these celebrations, analyses their texts and clarifies the criteria adopted by the Hieronymite monks in relation to local and regional devotions.
