Abstract

This is a study of Jaume Caresmar’s treatise on the history of the ecclesiastic primacy of Tarragona and, in particular, of his refutation of Toledo’s pretensions of holding a pre-eminent position. One of Caresmar’s (1717-1791) relatively few surviving synthetic works, this posthumously published book defends Tarragona on the basis of the city’s antiquity and asserts that, as opposed to Toledo, its authority does not depend on Visigothic hegemony, for the effects of the Islamic conquests.
