Abstract

The liturgical manuscripts kept since the 9th century in the Episcopal Library of Vic form a rare and remarkable set of books that allows one to observe certain evolutions of liturgy and piety throughout the course of the Middle Ages. Images acquire a growing importance and express new spiritual demands. The prayer of celebrants and that of the faithful are supported by the presence in images of Christ, the Virgin and the saints. The books are in consonance with the representations in painting and sculpture of reredoses, altar frontals and altar baldachins, crosses and images.
