Abstract

The object of this little work is to show that the ritual of the Confirmation sacrament contained in a Portuguese 13th-century pontifical (Lisbon, Cod. Alc. 162), alongside many other rituals, keeps the theological meaning and richness of their origins despite the different modifications introduced during the Middle Ages. From a geographical point of view, we state that all evidence comes from the Iberian Peninsula. It is most probably a reaction against the invasion of Germanic spirituality, evidenced by the 10th-century Roman-Germanic Pontifical.
