Mas Cals de Fitor: assaigs de perdurabilitat d'una masia mil·lenària en un espai d'interès natural Authors Joan Botey i Serra Abstract Described here is Mas Cals, an ancestral farmhouse on record for over one thousand years in the Gavarres Massif situated in the Baix Empordà region, 6 km from the central Costa Brava. This area is now a natural interest space (EIN, from the Catalan). In response to the interest in the permanence of this masia on the basis of its own resources, and in the preservation of the social and cultural functions which it carries out, we discuss the experiment conducted and nurtured by the owner himself for fifty years. We set out some thoughts in relation to the future permanence of this building, emphasizing the need for a greater knowledge of the social and cultural importance of masies with regard to hospitality, simplicity and solidarity. A museification approach should be avoided, seeking to preserve the living spirit of the masia, with culturally active people within it to welcome us.
