Les nombroses fonts conservades i l’enriquiment de perspectives interpretatives en facilita una revisió, la qual ha de ser prudent davant els paranys de la mateixa documentació i les dificultats hermenèutiques. Tanmateix la revisió és un repte que no es pot negligir, atès que els fets esdevinguts al nord-est peninsular entre els segles X i XII condicionen fortament el recorregut històric posterior.
