En els segles xii-xiii molts jueus exerciren d'administradors i financers al servei dels reis catalans, i com a delegats prop dels governs musulmans. En el segle xiii les comunitats jueves s'escamparen per nombroses poblacions catalanes, on es dedicaren intensament a activitats comercials i menestrals. La denominació hebrea de Sefarad es referia en aquells temps a les terres musulmanes, i mai no enclou Catalunya, la qual formava un continuum polític, lingüístic i cultural amb els territoris de Provença. La denominació moderna de sefardites és, doncs, anacrònica, quan es refereix als temps anteriors a l'expulsió de 1492. Els jueus, que eren considerats des de temps antics un grup etnoreligiós a part, podien aplicar les seves pròpies lleis en qüestions de dret privat i ensenyar la llengua i la cultura hebrees, bé que sempre tingueren el català com a llengua parlada. Catalunya produí figures eminents de la cultura hebraica medieval: Jafudà ben Barzilay, Abraham ben Hasday, Salomó ben Adret i Hasday Cresques, de Barcelona; Nissim ben Rovèn i Mossé ben Nahman, de Girona; Issac ben Sésset Perfet, de Barcelona, però resident a València; Simon ben Sémah Duran, de Mallorca; i Menahem ha-Meïrí, de Perpinyà.
