Amb el nom de cultura talaiòtica s’identifiquen unes comunitats que habitaven en petits poblats, que es dedicaven a l’explotació agropecuària en règim autàrquic i que tenien un desenvolupamentsocial en procés de jerarquització. El contacte amb l’exterior, segons el registre arqueològic, tot i la dissolució d’aquesta estructura social i econòmica, vendrà marcat pel fort impacte comercial i polític de les colònies púniques i gregues.
