El Túnel ferroviari de l'Argentera

Resum

The railway tunnel of Argentera has a length of 4.044 m. This construction was directed by civil engineer Eduard Maristany i Gibert between April, 1887 and March, 1890 being at the time the largest in Spain. The tunnel is included into the project of the railway line from Madrid to Barcelona and it crosses a difficult area, especially under the section mountain pass of «portell del Peiró». The present communication tries to show the innovation that was implied at that time perforation system with Ferroux type drilling machine which working with compressed air. The coal was used as a generic power source to obtain vapor and move machinery.
