Mod. Algher. valgíña 'swallow' is interpreted as a derivative - by means of the diminutive-affective suffix -ina (whence -iña, fonetically influencecl by valgíña 'eggplant') - of valgía 'swuift', which reflects (together with Sard f/vardzia etc.) Catal. f/valzia (< lat. FALC1CÚLA 'small scythe').
