Abstract

Lime concretes have been used since Roman times and have provided very good results, as may be seen in the civil architecture and the many works in general which are still standing in all the territories which once comprised the Roman Empire and in many works from subsequent periods as well. Used massively as a multipurpose building material, lime has been replaced by Portland cement, a highly industrialized material providing excellent performance, all of whose processes are closely controlled and which is highly acknowledged by professionals. However, Portland cement gives rise to various problems when used in restoration. Today, lime concretes, plasters and pastes can be used with full assurance, but it is necessary to spread the lime culture within the building profession: among architects, designers, advisers and technical experts as well as among the workers taking part in projects. Suitable results can only be achieved with knowledge and good practices. This paper, in particular, deals with some of the fundamental aspects of good practice in this field.
