Darwin in the press: What the Spanish dailies said about the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth Authors Esther Díez Anna Mateu Martí Domínguez Romero Abstract The bicentenary of Charles Darwins birth, celebrated in 2009, caused a surge in the interest shown by the press in the life and work of the renowned English naturalist. This article analyzes the press coverage devoted to the Darwin Year in eleven Spanish daily papers during the week of Darwins birthday and provides a brief synopsis of the positions adopted by the Spanish press regarding the theory of evolution. The analysis makes very clear the relatively strong support for creationism by the conservative press in Spain.
