A la monarquia hispànica,els estats de la Corona d’Aragó van optar de forma majoritària per l’arxiduc Carles d’Àustria (Carles III), mentre que la Corona de Castella va donar suport al duc Felip d’Anjou (Felip V). Després del Tractat d’Utrecht, Catalunya va prolongar la resistència durant catorze mesos, amb un govern republicà. A la fi de la guerra, els vencedors van imposar la repressió, l’exili i la fi de les constitucions catalanes.
