Però la novel·la catalana, que havia assolit un gran nivell a l’edat mitjana amb l’obra de Joanot Martorell Tirant lo Blanc, havia pràcticament desaparegut i els novel·listes catalans escrivien en castellà. No fou fins al 1862 que es publicà la primera novel·la de la Renaixença i estava inspirada en el model de Walter Scott. A partir d’aquí s’inicià un procés de represa de la novel·la catalana, l’eix del qual fou la novel·la històrica, en totes les seves variants.
