A Catalunya, els punts nodals d’aquesta evolució conjunta van ser el sorgiment d’imposicions generals sobre tot el territori, que obligaren els municipis a recórrer al censal, amb la qual cosa originaren el deute públic consolidat, i l’ensorrada financera de la dècada de 1380, seguidade dificultats causades per errors en la política monetària. La creació de la Taula de Canvi de Barcelona (1401) va pal·liar els dos problemes, però a partir de 1440 la crisi de la manufactura i els problemes monetaris van provocar forts enfrontaments pel poder municipal, que foren un dels factors de la Guerra Civil de 1462-1472, que arruïnaria el país. El redreç posterior va ser insuficient: la guerra havia liquidat la potència econòmica i política de Catalunya.
